On September 8, 2025, we hosted the 11th Annual Roberts/Smart Centre Fall Classic at Stonebridge Golf Club. It was a beautiful day of community, connection, and giving back—all in support of youth living with complex mental health and behavioural challenges.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors, golfers, donors, and volunteers, we raised $60,000 this year—bringing our total impact to more than $460,000 raised since the tournament began.

We’re proud to share the Roberts/Smart Centre’s 2024–2025 Annual Report:

“Leading the Way: A New Chapter Begins”.

This year marked a period of renewal and progress. We achieved re-accreditation through 2029, secured full licensing for our Secure Reintegration program, launched the ARC Clinical Model, redesigned intake, and introduced BookJane to strengthen stability in care. Together, these milestones reflect our commitment to quality, access, and innovation in intensive youth mental health services.

The report was launched at our Annual General Meeting on September 4, 2025 at the MD Learning Centre. MC Sam LaPrade, Executive Director Deborah Headley, and Board President Dean Tester shared achievements and the road ahead, including a Strategic Assessment for the 2026–2030 plan and work with the Ministry of Health on a new Secure Treatment Facility. We were honoured to welcome keynote speaker Tatum Wilson, CEO of Children’s Mental Health Ontario, who spoke to the future of youth mental health and strong collaboration across Ontario.

We also recognized the heart of RSC—our staff—through Long Service Awards, including a special tribute to Michel “Mike” Cousineau for 40 years of dedicated service:

We’re thrilled to unveil the Roberts/Smart Centre’s 2023-2024 Annual Report, “Empowering Youth Beyond Mental Health”.

This year has been one of reflection, growth, and celebration. With over 50 years of service, our programs and staff have made a lasting impact on the lives of youth across Ontario.

The report is filled with highlights, from our Fall Classic golf tournament and spooky-themed carnivals to Camp RSC and #BellLetsTalk Day, showcasing a year full of memorable moments.

Whether through live-in treatment, day programs, or community-based initiatives (and beyond), the Centre has remained steadfast in providing individualized care that fosters resilience and supports youth in their path to brighter futures.

The report was launched at our Annual General Meeting, which took place on November 13, 2024 at the Ottawa Police Association. Speakers included emcee Sam LaPrade, Executive Director Deborah Headley, Board Chair Simon Brazier, and Board VP Dean Tester.

We were also honoured to have Chief Eric Stubbs, Chief of Police for the Ottawa Police Service, as our keynote speaker. He presented our Executive Director and Board Chair with a Challenge Coin, a commendation for their exemplary conduct. Designed by Indigenous artist Jay Odjick, the coin’s theme “Stronger Together” perfectly aligns with our AGM’s theme of “Better Together”, reflecting our shared commitment to community solidarity.

The evening featured an original song from one of our youth, a video recapping our year, and handing out our Long-Service Awards:

On September 9, 2024, the 10th Annual Roberts/Smart Centre Fall Classic teed off at Stonebridge Golf Club, marking a decade of community support for youth mental health. This year’s tournament was a driving force in raising awareness and funds to help youth facing complex mental health and behavioral challenges. Since its inception, the Fall Classic has raised over $400,000, making it one of our major fundraising initiatives and a vital part of our mission.

Golfers hit the greens at noon with a shotgun start, enjoying a day full of friendly competition, camaraderie, and charity. The day wrapped up with a delicious buffet dinner (courtesy of Deloitte), fantastic prizes, and a silent auction full of locally donated goodies.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to our Title Sponsors, Tomlinson Group and Mattamy Homes, for being the driving force behind this year’s success. We also want to express our gratitude to our Chair and guest of honour, Councillor Tim Tierney—and to Omar and his incredible organizing committee, our volunteers, and our generous sponsors (listed below). Your incredible support ensures that we can continue making a meaningful impact on youth mental health for decades to come.

From June 25-27, Rideau Hill Camp on the Rideau River was abuzz with excitement as Camp RSC 2024 welcomed youth for three incredible days. This year’s camp was brimming with adventures, laughter, and memorable moments that everyone will cherish.

The Rideau River was the center of attention as campers eagerly engaged in canoeing and fishing. One lucky camper made a remarkable catch, reeling in a huge fish with a grin as big as his catch! Swimming in the camp’s in-ground pool was another highlight, providing a refreshing break from the summer heat and plenty of fun as campers splashed and played together.

A bit of harmless mischief added to the camp’s charm. One clever camper managed to place a hula hoop at the very top of the flagpole, amusing everyone and becoming a favourite campfire story. Speaking of campfires, they happened nightly and included lots of smores.

The camp concluded with the annual BBQ, where staff and Board members joined to celebrate the campers’ growth and achievements. Youth were awarded wooden camp medals that were lovingly handmade for categories such as “Best Monkeying Around”, “Smores Monster”, and “Biggest Fish”.

Camp RSC provides a unique opportunity for youth to disconnect from screens, connect with nature, and build essential life skills. It’s a place where they can develop confidence, resilience, and lasting friendships. The supportive environment encourages exploration, teamwork, and personal growth, helping each camper discover their potential.

 A special thank you goes out to Michel Cousineau and our dedicated staff members. Their hard work made Camp RSC 2024 an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Reflecting on these three wonderful days, we are grateful for the memories made and look forward to many more adventures. See you next year at Camp RSC!

On January 24, 2024, Roberts/Smart Centre participated in Bell Let’s Talk Day, “the world’s largest conversation about mental health, encouraging Canadians and people around the world to talk and take action to help reduce stigma and promote awareness and understanding so everyone can get the help they need” (source).

This year’s theme was “Let’s create real change”. Our youth and staff came together to highlight inspirational messages and share what creating change for mental health means to them.

We were proud to partner with Bell Let’s Talk, and are grateful for their support of our programs for at-risk youth. We know that when youth can access the mental health support that they need and deserve, it can positively change the course of their lives.

The Roberts/Smart Centre is currently seeking volunteers to join its Board of Directors.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about community mental health and have a strong commitment to the Centre’s mission of making a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable youth in our community.

The youth and families we have the privilege of serving have the most severe mental health and behavioural challenges. We help them by providing exceptional mental health services in a welcoming, supportive, inclusive, bilingual, and culturally safe environment. We also give them the tools, confidence, and support system they need to lead happy, productive, and fulfilling lives.

About the Role:

The Board of Directors plays a vital role as the governance of the Centre,  and is responsible for setting the strategic direction and overall policies of the organization.

Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings and participate in Board sub-committees.

They are also expected to actively participate in fundraising efforts and to serve as ambassadors for the Centre in the community.

Who We Are Looking For:

Potential candidates should have a proven track record of leadership, experience in business or community service, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals.

Specifically, we are looking for individuals with experience and expertise in the following:

• Indigenous Leadership
• Fundraising
• Government Relations (Municipal or Federal)
• Construction Management/Construction Industry Connection
• Human Resources
• Families / individuals with lived experience
• Individual(s) with mental health clinical/leadership experience

Candidates should also have a commitment to the Centre’s mission and values and be willing to make a meaningful contribution of time and resources.

The 12th Annual Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Gala took place on November 4, 2023, at the Shaw Centre.

Since its inception, the OPS Gala has raised over $1 million for local charities and community groups. We were honoured to be a beneficiary this year. It will go a long way to enriching the lives of the youth that we serve through the expansion of our school-based educational platform.
